What’s the deal with presidents and presidential candidates and their haircuts? Drudge is reporting that John Waffles Kerry flew his hairdresser to Pittsburg at an estimated cost of $1000 before a Meet the Press appearance. You may remember that Clinton did a similar thing in 1992 when he delayed traffic at LAX while he received a haircut on the tarmac.
CBS News Sunday Morning did an excellent story on the word’s largest ball of paint. With 18,000+ coats of paint, this thing is huge…and quite an example of patience and committment.
The TWiki . Jxta . BuildingJXTA wiki entry describes a sweet build process for JXTA. It uses ant to pull the source from CVS then build, and it can be applied to several other JXTA projects such as the shell or MyJXTA2. This automated method is so much easier than the manual method.
The only caveat…for windows users you must have CVS for the described process to work. I used cygwin with the CVS package.

Google and Akamai: Cult of Secrecy vs. Kingdom of Openness is an interesting article on these two companies that run massive distributed networks of computers. Perhaps the most interesting bits of information is the speculation on the size of Google’s network. For example, “The facts may be seeping out. Last Thanksgiving, the New York Times reported that Google had crossed the 100,000-server mark. If true, that means Google is operating perhaps the largest grid of computers on the planet. “
In this post, James Gosling chimes in on the Sun/Microsoft settlement. He ends his post with, “We’re not a bunch of moronic secret subversive Microsoft lapdogs. We’ve worked very hard over the years to fairly balance the needs of all the various communities. Relax. Have a little faith.”

I’ve always thought it was interesting that the open source community is a fan of Larry Lessig. Did they choose him or did he choose them? Nevertheless, in the day of the DMCA, every geek needs a good lawyer; and while I haven’t studied Lessig’s work enough to make conclusions, he raises some interesting points. (I have listened to Free Culture.)
This may be old news, but last month Stephen Manes of Forbes.com wrote “Let’s Have Less Of Lessig”. Mr. Manes raises some interesting points, but it’s difficult to get over his “he’s an idiot” presentation; but it did get me to Forbes.com, which I presume it Manes’s chief end rather than really understanding the implications of the DMCA.
